First of all, I would like to congratulate you for the outstanding work that you have accomplished during these weeks. As we said at the beginning of the module, it is difficult to teach (referred to us) about innovation and creativity, but we think that it is possible to learn (referred to you) about these topics.

Surely you have realized that…during this Workout, almost the 100% is learnt with one of my favourite method: Discovery Learning (not to be confused with trial-error). During these two weeks you have discovered interesting things as your Basadur profile, the different kinds of innovation, several methodologies, the importance of users’ feedback and of prototyping as well as the difficulties of coordinating a team in an innovation work and mostly of all, the arduous task of prototyping and testing ideas that are defined step by step.

I also hope that the “invisible learning” that you have had during this module, helps you in the future (I mean Trello, Crowdfunding, Apps Prototyping, Drones or hardware).

What I can guarantee is that this process, of launching an idea, of prototyping, of testing and re-prototyping (which in innovation is known as PIVOTING: leaving a foot aligned and change the direction of the other), can be done in the timeframe that we proposed.

Let me show you an example of how I did (I’m not saying “would” because I really did it) the workout. In this case, I chose the Challenge 1, and…

10:00 We hypothesized that people buy organic food because they want to feel healthier, they don’t care about the price and they would like to buy it cheaper. What did we do? We gave us 20 minutes to realize if it was true.

10:30 We created two teams and run towards El Corte Inglés and an organic food shop that luckily was near. We asked the people that were there.

10:40 We felt excited when we saw that our hypothesis were true but we write down that some people say that they prefer QUALITY instead of a cheaper price. We started to draw possible interface screens of an APP to sell ecologic products, skipping El Corte Inglés and the ecologic shop; less intermediaries, lower price (but we didn’t validate it with nobody and we auto convinced ourselves that it was true – Mistake nº 1)

11:00 With some draws (not particularly attractive ones) we started to finish the interface screens of the app. With our design you will be able to buy organic food online in an easy and simple way. A member of the team tried to phone organic farmers without success: it was Saturday morning.

12:00 We felt really proud of our app and we decided to test it with the buyers of the organic section of El Corte Ingles, we were very excited because we knew they would like it.

12:15 Problems start: the first buyer we show our app, told as that she never would buy anything through an app, she doesn’t trust.

12:16 The second buyer told us that he didn’t have enough time.

12:17 The third one says that she doesn’t make purchases over the Internet; What’s happening?

12:18 At last a buyer took some time for testing the app. He told us that he buys organic for feeling himself better and healthier but not for a saving reason. He would buy over the Internet but he didn’t trust on the quality of our products. He wants to choose his organic tomatoes in real time, not choosing between some photos.

12:20 we felt really depressed and we come back to the office thinking that although we designed the best app with the cheapest organic products, nobody would never buy organic food with an app. That’s innovation, sometimes you’re wrong.

At least, we saved some time with these tests, because we didn’t started the POP prototype.

12:45 after the disappointment, we relaxed ourselves and thought that the App wasn’t the problem, neither the Internet. Customers only had problems with “choosing” the products with the app instead of in person.

13:00 after a divergence in which we reached ideas that I dare not telling you, we saw interesting thinks on our board: “Meetings”, “Just Eat” and “vans”. We thought… if they want to choose the products, what would happen (this is one of the most important sentences in innovation if we validate our hypothesis) if we design an app that is a mix between Meet-up, Just Eat and people choosing what they want to buy??  


No idea.

13:20 We started to prototype an app with the following characteristics: customers buy 1kg of tomatoes to the farmer, the customers have to tell us where they live and which day they are free. We join the orders and send them to the farmer for the preparation of the orders that our van is going to pick up.

Once we got all the addresses and orders ready, our van will do a route with several stops. This way, customers can visit our van and change their 1kg of tomatoes coupon for 1kg of tomatoes selected by themselves.

13:25 we didn’t hold out a lot and just 1 member of the team went to El Corte Inglés to discover if someone was interested on the app.

13:29 He phoned us excited, two girls told them that it was a good idea, especially for meeting people with their own environmental and dietetic concerns.

13:30 we get excited again and started to build the POP prototype, you can watch it and use it:

In our app you could buy your food by choosing where and when to pick it up. A van would visit your home (or a close place) and some users would choose their products at the same time. We even named it: EcoMeetUp.

I recommend mobile access or pressing preview if you use a web browser.

13:50 we decide to test it on El Corte Inglés and on the organic shop.

13:55 a person told us: “It’s so cool! Are you really going to launch it?” Nobody shows objections or inconveniences about apps or about untrusting on the products, they give as ideas about products to be included or about creating a club of organic recipes in the app…

13:29 two members of the team were at the shop and they also had a positive feedback.

14:00 We decided to leave it here because the goals of creating a prototype (initial and with a little useful purpose) help us to learn (people don’t want me to choose their organic tomatoes), being able to pivoting (we continued with an app and with organic food but we changed how to do the business: we don’t choose the customer products and you will be able to meet people with your own interests while saving some money) After pivoting, we were able to validate that we were on the right way and the phase of improving the functionalities was starting. Consequently, we had everything needed to move from a prototype to a MVP (Minimum Viable Product).

So this is how we developed the Workout a Saturday morning. I hope you had enjoyed as much as we did.
